Major Characters of the novel "The Guide" – 

                                                           

1. Raju (Railway Raju): 

Raju is the protagonist of the novel. He begins his life as the son of a small shopkeeper near the railway station in Malgudi. Because of his excellent communication skills and charming personality, he becomes a successful tourist guide and earns the nickname "Railway Raju." His life changes dramatically when he meets Rosie and becomes involved in her career. Although intelligent and resourceful, Raju is also ambitious, possessive, and dishonest at times. His forgery leads to imprisonment, but by the end of the novel he undergoes a profound transformation. Through his fasting and self-sacrifice, he emerges as a symbol of redemption and spiritual growth.

2. Rosie / Nalini

Rosie is one of the most important female characters in the novel. She is Marco's wife and a gifted classical dancer. Coming from a hereditary dancing community, she possesses immense talent and a deep passion for dance. However, her husband disapproves of her artistic interests, leaving her emotionally neglected. After leaving Marco, she adopts the stage name "Nalini" and becomes a famous dancer. Rosie is sensitive, hardworking, independent, and determined. She represents the struggle of women seeking personal freedom and self-expression in a conservative society.

3. Marco

Marco is Rosie's husband and a professional archaeologist. He is highly educated, intelligent, and dedicated to his research on ancient monuments and cave paintings. However, he lacks emotional warmth and fails to understand his wife's needs and aspirations. His indifference toward Rosie's passion for dance contributes to the collapse of their marriage. Although he appears cold and detached, Marco is not portrayed as a villain; rather, he symbolizes intellectual obsession and emotional isolation.

4. Velan

Velan is a simple and hardworking villager from Mangal. He is the first person to mistake Raju for a holy man and becomes his most devoted follower. Velan has immense faith in Raju's wisdom and spiritual power. His unquestioning belief helps establish Raju's reputation among the villagers. Loyal, respectful, and sincere, Velan represents the faith and simplicity of rural India.

5. Raju's Mother

Raju's mother is a traditional Indian woman who values family honour, morality, and social respectability. She cares deeply for her son and tries to guide him toward a respectable life. However, she strongly disapproves of his relationship with Rosie because Rosie is a married woman living outside social conventions. When Raju refuses to listen to her, she leaves the house. She symbolizes traditional values and the older generation's moral outlook.

6. Raju's Father

Raju's father owns a small shop near the railway station. He is hardworking, practical, and disciplined. He plays an important role during Raju's childhood by teaching him basic business skills and responsibility. Though he dies early in the novel, his influence helps shape Raju's early development.

7. Gaffur

Gaffur is a taxi driver and one of Raju's friends in Malgudi. He frequently assists tourists and often works alongside Raju. Honest and straightforward, Gaffur provides practical observations about the events unfolding around Raju, Rosie, and Marco. He serves as a minor but significant supporting character.

8. Mani

Mani is Raju's loyal friend from Malgudi. He is physically strong, outspoken, and protective of Raju. Unlike Raju, Mani is direct and uncomplicated. Throughout the novel, he remains a dependable companion and often helps Raju during difficult situations.

9. Velan's Sister

Although she appears briefly, Velan's sister plays an important role in the opening chapters. Her refusal to marry according to her family's wishes leads Velan to seek Raju's advice. This incident begins Raju's accidental career as a spiritual guide.
