The Victorian period can be considered the 'Golden age' of the novel, which has become the art form most capable of reflecting the complexity of the modern world and the main source of entertainment of the middle classes .
It should never be forgotten that prose fiction in the 19th Century provided the whole range of popular pastime that is now occupied with television, radio, mobile phones ,videos and etc .Like as we using social media the Victorian period people read novels to experience with vicarious fields of adventure suspense and horror .
Victorian people had no mobile culture to pass their time as we have, there was no Telephone by which one could gossip with neighbours and friends at all distances, there were no automobiles like car and bike by which one could avoid boredom by 'going for a ride '.
The Victorian household whether urban or rural was essentially self contained and the growth of prosperity and leisure result in an avid demand for domestic entertainment .
So people build taste in reading novels to pass their time and to get entertainment, in other to say that there was no alternative to novel to get entertain .
In the middle age the Victorian era the vast networks brought current literature within the physical and financial reach of dwellers even in remote villages .
The cheap popular magazine was a big development of the 1830s and the editors easily perceive the advantage of sustaining reader interest through serial stories . This magazine was contained of 32 pages and published in 20 monthly parts. Every literate person above the poverty line does had access to a continuous supply of lively reading matter and the novels became very popular in Victorian era.
The authors,editors and publishers for fully aware of their customers, fluctuaton in monthly sales was an adequate index of success or failure and reader reaction was further conveyed by letters to the author or the publisher .
Victorian readers and writers were mearly more honest in demanding contents and authors were fulfilling the demands of readers and qualities by the unrefined basic formula of 'make them laugh' 'make them weep' and 'make them wait' .
Just as the new methods of Publication enabled the novel to reach and immensely expanded audience ,so the social habits of the time endowed it with maximum impact .
Reading aloud the novel process came to existence and elder child was assigned the functions of interpreting the current novels to the assembled family in special voice effect without skipping words or sentences .
In this way novels in the Victorian Era developed and became a source of entertainment and education because there were no entertainment to Victorian people .
